Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Skylights
What’s the difference between polycarbonate and impact glass used in skylights?
Polycarbonate is a type of durable and transparent plastic polymer. It is less expensive than glass, has the signature “domed” look, and typically comes insulated and tinted to cut down on heat transfer. Glass is flat, which is more aesthetically appealing for most customers, quieter when it rains, and has a natural insulating factor. Glass is pricier but is covered by a 10-year warranty and will increase the value of your home.
Both materials have options that are fully hurricane-code compliant for safety during Florida storms.
What’s the difference between a curb-mounted skylight and a self-flashing skylight?
A curb-mounted flashlight is installed onto a roof curb, which is a frame that sits on your roof. When installed, a curb-mounted skylight will sit on the curb like a shoebox lid. A self-flashing skylight is one that comes with its own curb, which is attached to roof flashing (a flat border that fastens onto the roof around the curb and skylight).
Which of these options is right for you depends on your existing skylight installation and/or aesthetic preference. All installations come with a 2-year leak free warranty.
What if I have a drywall ceiling where I want a skylight? Can I still get one installed?
